16th Century Chimney Repair - Crediton, Devon
This Grade 2* listed property in Crediton, Devon was built in the 16th Century. During re-thatching, sizeable cracks and bulging were noticed in the chimney and a structural engineer was called.
The structural engineer instructed that a bracing scaffold be put in place immediately as it was dangerously unstable, and he instructed Target to survey the chimney and provide a repair scheme.
During Target's survey it was concluded that the stone built chimney with rubble fill was actually a free standing structure with the cob walls of the house abutting it. The capping to the top of the chimney was cracked and had been letting in water for some time which had caused the degradation of the walls from the inside.
Target provided the repair scheme and after approval of its methods with English Heritage & the conservation officer, Target installed Bar Flex bedjoint re-reinforcement and Cem Flex ties to restore the structural integrity.
Target re-capped the top of the chimney and removed the cementitous pointing, repointing it with traditional lime mortar making the repairs invisible.
